This Jolly Little Gunboat: The USS Winona On the Gulf Coast and the Mississippi River, 1861-1863

After the conclusion of the Civil War, many officers wrote about their service in the conflict. The enlisted men did have venues such as the Confederate Veteran Magazine and, to a lesser extent, The Century Magazine to express their viewpoints and to relate their experiences. The voices of the enlisted men, however, remained much under-represented in the literature. During the last 30 years, though, many more diaries and journals of Civil War soldiers and sailors have been brought to light by publication. The recollections representing the naval side of the war remain a much smaller number because fewer men served in the navies.
