Navies to expand manned-unmanned collaboration

Nations are demonstrating how they can work together. The RAN's approach, under the umbrella of project SEA 1778, is to extensively use unmanned systems in combination with manned platforms. Robotic and autonomous systems (RAS) will provide speed, mass and economy of effort. In addition to RAS, there is also an urgent need for AI, as it can suggest the best time to start an operation, the tactical employment of different manned and unmanned systems, and the degree of autonomy or manned control needed. The European Defence Agency's (EDA) OCEAN2020 (Open Cooperation for European Maritime Awareness) project is an initiative that involves 42 partner organizations from 15 EU countries integrating unmanned platforms with traditional systems. The group recently performed an at-sea demonstration in the Gulf of Taranto, Italy, led by the Italian Navy, and a subsequent demonstration is set for summer 2020 in the Baltic Sea, led by the Royal Swedish Navy.
