ASNE Tidewater Section Hosts 20th Annual 'Ultimate Build-A-Boat Contest'

If you were given three sheets of 4-ft. x 8-ft. luan, a few lengths of dimensional lumber, zip ties, Sikaflex-291 marine adhesive, one friend and four hours of construction time, could you build a seaworthy boat? Would you dare race it on the Elizabeth River in front of a large Harborfest crowd? Welcome to the Ultimate Build-A-Boat Contest, more commonly known as "The Quick-and-Dirty Boatbuilding," one of the most intriguing events and a fan favorite at Norfolk's annual Harborfest celebration. The ASNE Tidewater Section and Sika Corporation are the event sponsors, organizing and providing all of the build materials at no cost to the participants. For the second consecutive year, academic and corporate sponsorships offset the entire cost for the building materials, a catered lunch before the big race, trophies, and even power tool prizes for every builder.
