I am reminded regularly of the value provided by the American Society of Naval Engineers to our technical professionals and service. As the Coast Guards Chief Engineer, I oversee the maintenance and upgrades of a diverse fleet of boats and cutters that support our eleven statutory missions. The Coast Guard Fleet varies from new vessels that possess the latest technology, to cutters and boats that average more than thirty-two years in age and still serve our Nation, albeit with some challenges. Maintaining this varied portfolio requires that our engineers continuously refresh their knowledge through both formal and informal means. ASNE continues to provide outstanding opportunities for technical professionals from industry and government to exchange ideas, best practices, and information on the latest developments in ship maintenance and construction. The ASNE meetings, seminars, journals, papers, and other events are vital to balancing requirements with affordability through innovative solutions, as well as developing our newest naval engineers.
