KAHLENBERG BROS.: THE ROLLS ROYCE OF MARINE ENGINE BUILDERS

The marine engines developed and manufactured by Kahlenberg Bros. Company of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, are credited with revolutionizing commercial fishing on the Great Lakes (Figure 1). Founded by 25-year-old William R. Kahlenberg (Figure 2) and his younger brother Otto in 1895, the firm began as a small machine shop near the town's harbor entrance. At first, they and their three employees installed machine tools and "converted simple high pressure steam engines to the steeple compound type and constructed small vertical engines for marine and stationary work" (Kahlenberg Papers). The latter powered-industrial and farm machinery.
