This new edition of Antony Preston and John Major's classic work of naval history is much more than a mere reprint. The larger format provides room for many additional photographs and the bold, clean layout makes the various tables and appendices, including an interesting new section by Lindsay Doulton on the life, times, and restoration of HMS Gannet, easier to read. Doulton's account, complemented by contemporary photographs of the crew and the deck, shows us the life-rncycle of one gunboat and the conditions of its crew, a micro-history which complements the broad-brush approach of the main text. The addition of a foreword by Andrew Lambert and afterword by Eric Grove help us to understand the book's continuing historical importance.
