The Viking Age: Ireland and the West (Proceedings of the Fifteenth Viking Congress)

Water connected all the Viking Age settle ments, which at their apex stretched from Baghdad to Scandinavia to southern Europe to the north Atlantic and onto the mainland of North America. Far from the modern image of blond, helmeted raiders, Vikings established important trading posts and farming settlements throughout their maritime empire, with Ireland being a central part of their North Atlantic colonies. The Viking presence in Ireland and the surrounding British Isles was the focus of the Fifteenth Viking Congress, held at University College Cork in August 2005.
