State Barge of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun (circa 1334-1325 BC)

Among the fabulous treasures entombed with the eighteenth-dynasty pharaoh Tutankhamun were thirty-five ship models. The tomb was discovered in the Valley of the Kings on the west bank of the Nile by Howard Carter in the year 1922. This photograph is a view looking into the treasury where the jackal god Anubus guards the entrance. (Figure 1) Behind Anubus is the golden shrine con taining the four canopic jars. To the left of the entrance is Object 276, a model of the pharaohs' travelling vessel complete with rigging and sail. (Figure 2) The model was intended to convey the pharaoh through the afterlife for eternity. Thus far it has completed its mission.
