European research: Large research and technology networks funded by the European Union (EU) have failed to meet their goal of stimulating additional investment from private businesses, a report published on 14 October by the European Court of Auditors concluded. In evaluating the €17.5-billion (US$26-billion) Sixth Framework Programme, which ran from 2002 to 2006, the auditors said that such projects generally disintegrate as soon as EU funding runs out and are poorly managed and monitored.
