The deep-sea drilling vessel Chikyu has recovered rock samples from more than 2.1 kilometres beneath the sea floor, the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology announced on 6 September. Chikyu is drilling off the coast of Japan north of the fault zone responsible for the 2011 Tohoku earthquake.
