Ask ten people how they would go about finding the right mate, and you will probably get ten different answers. But might they all be mistaken? Writing in Nature Communications, Sturm et al.' describe how the olfactory system is an amazingly sensitive and accurate discriminator of genetic related-ness, and suggest that this faculty may provide essential information that influences kin recognition, mate choice and other types of social interaction.
