After a decade of policies aimed at boosting research, science in Argentina is starting to have positive effects on economic development and society. Now, greater involvement from the private sector is required. Five years ago, the Argentinian government launched the Sectoral Funding Strategy to promote public-private consortia. From 2008 to 2013, more than 5,000 companies, including 80 start-ups, received a total of US$800 million as grants or loans with below-market interest rates. The government also created programmes for postdocs and established researchers to gain experience in private companies. The number of scientists in industry increased from 7,200 in 2003 to 12,300 in 2012, and is expected to rise to more than 18,000 by 2020.
