ASSESSMENT OF WATER QUALITY WITH EMPHASIS ON NITRATE AND NITRITE LEVELS IN SUBSURFACE WATERS OF TARIKERE TOWN IN KARNATAKA STATE

摘要

A study was conducted during March 2005 to assess the quality of groundwater in Tarikere town, Chikmagalore district in Karnataka State. Fifteen groundwater samples were collected from the study area and analyzed for nitrite and nitrate level in addition to other physico-chemical parameters. The obtained data reflect that the high nitrate and nitrite concentration, observed in groundwaters of the study area, can be attributed to domestic sewage pollution, poor sanitation work and bad agriculture practices rather than the lithounits of the study area. Therefore, the nitrate and nitrite levels in the study area revealed that the waters analysed of the study area are not suitable for drinking purpose.
