Why is Chicago the perfect place for the 2004 Natural Areas Conference?

It can't be done! It's too expensive. Where are the natural areas? Can't we have our conference in some camp in the country someplace? These are just some of the comments planners of this year's natural areas conference in Chicago heard as we began the process of conference development. But soon after a conference call with folks representing Chicago Wilderness, Illinois Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, the City of Chicago, Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Illinois Nature Preserves Commission, it became apparent that there were few places in the country (maybe even the world) where there is such a long and continuing history of efforts to protect nature. Illinois is the land of people like George Fell, D. H. Burnham and Jens Jensen.
