A PIONEER OF POLAR PHOTOGRAPHY

Frank hurley has long been recognised as a pioneer in the field of polar photography, above all for the work he undertook on the Douglas Mawson and Ernest Shackleton expeditions to Antarctica (1911-1914 and 1914-1917 respectively). It seems timely to reconsider his contribution in light of the forthcoming centenary of the Mawson expedition next year. This provides an invaluable opportunity to bring Hurley's celebrated photographs to the attention of a new audience. While Hurley's Antarctic photographs defined his career, they also played a crucial role in shaping the public's image of Antarctica at a time when interest in it was flourishing.
