Lillie younghusband and her Album

On the opening page of a richly decorated album, the inscription dated October 1856 reads '[To] Lillie Younghusband from dear Mama'. The album was a gift from Mrs Younghusband to her second daughter, Eliza, known to family and friends as Lillie. The Younghusbands were prominent in South Australian society. Eliza's father, William Younghusband, was a member of the Legislative Council and held cabinet rank as Chief Secretary. As a politician and businessman he was greatly interested in the development of the Murray River steamship trade. The story of Eliza's album has many links with the Murray River.
