Former Defense Secretary, Air Force Secretary Dies

Harold Brown, the 14th secretary of defense who also served as the nation's 8th secretary of the Air Force, died Jan. 4 at his home in Rancho Santa Fe, California. He was 91. The first scientist to be named defense secretary, Brown led the Defense Department from 1977 to 1981 under President Jimmy Carter. He drew heavily from his experience as Air Force secretary during the Vietnam War to shape the military in ways that continue to be felt today.
