International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 Perspective

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a worldwide federation founded in 1946 to promote the development of international manufacturing, trade and communication standards. ISO is composed of member bodies from more than 120 countries. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is the US representative to ISO. ISO receives input from government, industry, and other interested parties before developing a standard. All standards developed by ISO are voluntary; no legal requirements force countries to adopt them. However, countries and industries often adopt ISO standards, thereby making them mandatory.
