As a nuclear physicist who has lecturedrnon the topic "Flying Saucers ARE Real" at more than 600 colleges and over 100 professional groups, and who has published 4 books about UFOs, I was quite surprised to find that I actually agreed with some of the sentiments expressed by anti-ufologist Dr. Michael Shirmer in his monthly debunking ("Skeptical") columnrnin the July 1, Scientific American. For example, he claims "Unfortunately for UFOlogists, scientists cannot accept as definitive proof of alien visitation such evidence as blurry photographs, grainy videos and anecdotes about spooky lights in the sky." Of course. But none of us scientific ufologists make any such claims. We are concerned with clear photographs and un-grainy videos, and physical trace cases (more than 3000 available) and multiple witness radar visual sightings, solidly researched abduction cases such as described in "Captured! The Betty and Barney Hill UFO Experience".(1) I begin almost all of my lectures by reviewing 5 large scale scientific studies which I know 98% of the people in my audiences have not read because I ask after describing each one. It is clear that Michael hasn't read them either.
