I wanted to take the opportunity in my first column in the Journal to extend my warm regards to all of you. My name is Chris Cogswell, and I am the new Director of Research for our organization. I assume that to many of you my name is completely new, and so I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself, my background, and give a broad outline of some of the various projects I hope to spearhead. I have been interested in the question of UFOs since I was a kid, with the very first case that really piqued my interest being that of Betty and Barney Hill. This love of these cases, the mystery behind them, and the sorts of advanced technologies that may propel some interstellar craft led me to a career in the sciences. I eventually obtained a bachelor s degree in chemical engineering and philosophy from the University of New Hampshire, and finally a PhD in chemical engineering from Northeastern University. I also continued my interest in anomalous research and, in particular, the philosophical questions raised when science fiction becomes science fact and vice versa. The opportunity to be a part of the research MUFON performs is nothing less than a lifelong dream come true, and it is an opportunity that I do not plan to waste. With your help, I believe we can improve our research methods, put out a significantly increased volume of technical reports to the public, and improve our ability to best represent the membership of our organization against criticism and critique.
