The Shipping Man

As an almost-exclusive reader of non-fiction, I did not expect to learn much factual material in The Shipping Man. After reading the book over the course of several back-to-back flights, not only did I find the book to be an engaging read, but I learned a few things along the way. What The Shipping Man does well is provide a glimpse into the world of ship finance, an area so unknown to many naval architects, marine engineers, and ship operators. The author covers all of the basics-equity, bonds, liens, mortgages, banking, brokers, and the volatile markets that bring it all together-and explains each topic in digestible terms. I felt as though I had absorbed an entire survey course of ship finance in just a few days. It was engaging enough to motivate me to undertake more detailed research on some of these topics after I finished the book.
