This past winter, every member of the sophomore class at Webb Institute worked as a cadet on a ship. The students were placed on vessels traveling all around the world, ranging from South Korea to the Panama Canal to the Pineapple Run connecting Hawaii with the West Coast. Four students sailed on Maersk Peary as part of Operation Deep Freeze, the annual mission to supply fuel to McMurdo Station in Antarctica. The four of us—Ashley Dias, Abishai Thomas, Muriel Weathers, and myself—spent a total of 84 days at sea, working as cadets aboard Maersk Peary.
