If you have ever wondered why and how China has become a world-class maritime competitor, this is the book to read. The second edition is considerably revised and longer compared to the first (which was published in 2010) as it accounts for the recent more aggressive and belligerent change in China's international relations with its neighbors and with the United States under President Xi Jinping. This book is a worthwhile and authoritative text that relies heavily on vetted Chinese open-source publications; it cites and quotes Chinese policy makers, senior military officers, strategists, and scholars. Nevertheless, it is a well written and an easy read.
