摘要

As I write this, it's been about three months since the world hit the PAUSE button. The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc and heartache on people around the world: loss of life, loss of loved ones, loss of jobs, loss of businesses, and on and on. As we gradually move toward re-opening, we're learning just how our lives will be changed and what some call "the new normal" will look like. Unsurprisingly, the maritime sector has been hit by the fallout of the pandemic. But, as in so many other areas of life, we're seeing people and organizations working together to get through the worst of the crisis. This past weekend, The Maritime Executive reported that, starting in early July, the United States Navy will deploy more than 1,600 reservists to support aircraft carrier and submarine maintenance at its four public shipyards: Portsmouth, Norfolk, Puget Sound, and Pearl Harbor. The effort is part of the "Surge Maintenance" program, which augments the navy's civilian workforce in times of need.
