When Maggie Nate approached me back in March to write an article on the subject of digital twins for this issue of (mt), I was surprised on a couple of levels. First, I am not a marine engineer or naval architect, like so many of those who have contributed excellent articles to this publication. Second, I have only been involved in the marine and offshore industry for the past few years. Meaning, I am literally a beginner myself, and still drinking from the fire hose. So I wondered, "why would anyone be interested in what I have to say or write?" Maggie was quick to reassure me that, in spite of those concerns, it was an important topic to SNAME members and the idea that being a subject matter expert is a prerequisite is simply not true. After all, there is no industry consensus yet on what a digital twin is, so how could we have experts on the subject? Having been somewhat relieved of my concerns, I accepted the challenge of contributing an article that others might want to read. I can say that I am a subject matter enthusiast, which is what motivates me to share what I have learned from so many others who are abundantly more knowledgeable than myself.
