The first generation of the Internet focused on the concept of connecting human beings to information, and to each other. One person could post a shopping catalog or a family vacation picture, and others could consume it. The latest generation of the Web extends that concept to include "things." These things typically are devices that generate or accumulate information, such as smoke detectors, traffic signals, pressure gauges, or digital bilge pumps. In the exact same way that your computer or smartphone connects to the Internet via an IP address, so too do these devices. The information they capture is typically then relayed to another machine or server on the Internet.
