City of L.A. Multifamily Residential Recycling Challenges

Arange of collection and outreach methods were tested in various neighborhoods throughout the City of Los Angeles (City). The Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation (LASAN) already collects recycling, green materials, and trash in a three-bin system from 750,000 customer accounts that include multifamily complexes of four units and under. In July 2007, the City MultiFamily Residential Recycling Program (MFRP) transitioned from a pilot program servicing 70,000 multifamily residential units to a permanent citywide program currently servicing approximately 402,000 units in more than 17,000 properties. The MFRP has experienced a growth of 474% from its pilot phase, and services nearly 70% of the City's apartments and condos. The MFRP has diverted more than 102,000 tons of recyclables from landfills.
