Wally parks He was the godfather of hot rods and drag racing. Wally Parks founded the National Hot Rod Association in 1951 to make drag racing a safe, sanctioned sport. He was the first editor of Hot Rod magazine and a close confidante of Motor Trend founder Robert E. Petersen. Parks retired as NHRA president in 1983, but remained on the NHRA's board in 1999, a year after he helped open the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum in Pomona, California. He died September 29 at a hospital in California at the age of 94.
