I'VE ALWAYS BEEN fascinated by the future, whether presented by Gene Roddenberry, carnival palm readers and soothsayers, or Nostradamus. So it was with rapt attention that I listened to the various speakers presenting at this winter's inaugural TED@MotorCity event, the theme of which was New Tomorrows. If you're unfamiliar with the TED events (as I was until a few days before this one), TED is a nonprofit devoted to "ideas worth spreading." Initiated in 1984, the idea-swapping conferences originally gathered luminaries from the worlds of Technology, Entertainment, and Design, but have since broadened their scope.
