The winter season will be long gone (in the Northern Hemisphere, at least) by the time you read this, but the Jetta TDI and I thoroughly enjoyed our wintry trek into the Rocky Mountains. Thanks to a set of Toyo Observe GSi5 winter tires and cautious driving, the car sliced through snow, ice, and frosty conditions with just a few interventions from the stability/ traction control system. It creaked a bit inside after a sub-20-degree F overnight soak, but proved predictable on unfamiliar roads. The three-stage seat heaters work swiftly, and the seats get plenty warm even at the lowest setting. Most surprising, there was no fuel-economy penalty on the tires after my 3000-mile excursion-I averaged more than 42 mpg.
