Back in the days when there were only carburetors, experts concluded that marine engines had been developed to their practical limits. There would be no more horsepower per cubic inch, from either gas or diesel engines, and fuel economy was as good as it would ever get. Fortunately, the experts were wrong. Since those days, EPA emissions mandates and microcomputer combustion controls have advanced propulsion design at a dizzying pace. Stern-drives, in particular, are cleaner and have more horsepower, yet the engines themselves are more mannerly. In addition, the horsepower levels formerly reserved for finely-tuned race motors are now available to the boater who takes delight in zooming across the water.
