Economists are fond of saving that a little com-petition is a good thing. One proof of this theory is the number of benefits that boat owners and the environment have reaped during the past decade of outboard motor innovation. Competition has resulted in the elimination of virtually all the fuel-guzzling, exhaust-heavy two-strokes of just 10 years ago. Those motors have been replaced by sophisticated machines that conserve fuel and produce the type of crisp, exciting acceleration that any boat racer would envy.
