A modern spark plug is an extremely advanced bit of engineering. Consider what it must do: deliver a strong spark from start-up to full-load while surviving 1000 psi pressure peaks, constant vibration and chemical attack. It must endure temperatures between -40℉ and 1800℉ with thermal shocks of several hundred degrees at every firing event, and it must insulate 30,000 volts with only a few millimeters of material. Today, even the most basic spark plug can deliver more than 20,000 miles of trouble-free service, and premium plugs can perform three times that long. This minor miracle is made possible by modern materials and manufacturing techniques.
