With many recalls, you can't tell by looking at the car that attention is needed. But there is a place you can look for that information. If you're a taxpayer, you're already paying for a service that'll let you know about any safety-related vehicle recalls that have been ordered by Uncle Sam. When a manufacturer recalls a car or truck model, and/or if federal safety officials order one, the vehicle maker sends out letters in an effort to let registered owners know that a defect needs to be fixed.
