Question: The pads on a 2006 Ford~R Escape Hybrid SUV need replacing. Is it dangerous to do so if you do not have the proper scan tool from Ford? Is there a way to change pads on an Escape hybrid without the scan tool and be safe? Answer: Any qualified technician can change the pads without the scan tool and be safe. The problem is that the Escape Hybrid SUV performs a pad check when the door is opened or unlocked with a remote. The brake actuator pump comes on and builds pressure while testing the system. To be safe, there are two ways to disable this test while changing the brake pads. Technicians can conduct a battery disconnect and remove the battery junction box (BJB) fuses 24 (5DA) and 31 (50A). But the quickest way is to put the system into Fad Service Mode. Simply place the vehicle in Park and turn the key on; then apply and hold the brake pedal down; then turn the ignition OFF and ON three times rapidly (within 3 seconds), making sure to leave the last key cycle ON. Release the pedal and observe the brake warning lamp flashing as pressure is being dumped (which can be heard). The lamp will remain ON once the pressure is gone. The key shouldn't be turned OFF and the vehicle shouldn't be moved. To exit the mode, simply turn the key OFF then ON, or move the shifter from Park, turn the ignition off, or move the vehicle. Once the vehicle is in 'pad service mode,' the pads can be serviced as normal.
