The omisonic ultrasonic detection kit is for auto repair professionals, not CIA spooks - even though it has headphones and comes in a dark case. It also includes a sound emitter, a receiver/amplifier with interchangeable wand and tube probes. Omitec says OmiSonic can be used in several ways. The most obvious is like a high-tech stethoscope, using the wand to touch suspected components and listen in. The receiver/amplifier can be set to cancel certain sounds, enabling a technician to hunt for the noise being chased. Sometimes it's easier to locate a sound by holding the hollow-tube probe a slight distance from the component. Experimentation, say our testers, is the key here. When seeking out wind noises and weatherstripping leaks, don't have an assistant drive while you listen at the window and door openings. Instead, leave the car parked. Turn on the sound emitter, close the windows and doors and listen around weatherstrips from outside.
