here are several different functions an air door actuator can perform. Air door actuators can manipulate temperature blend, recirculation, mode, or defrost doors within the vehicle's HVAC system. A vehicle may have up to eight such actuators. Due to a generally poor OE design, these small motors are notorious for a high failure rate. Original equipment door actuators tend to over-extend, which causes excessive stress on the internal components, leading to extensive damage to the gears and freezing the air door in one posi- tion. This causes improper air flow in the vehicles cabin. Weak internal gears, often made of low-grade plastic, poor shaft design and excessive torque contribute to this common failure.
