As the world's largest steam coal exporter, trades from Indonesia are reflective of shifts in demand fundamentals, and have been highly responsive to the changing import requirements of China and India, as well as being ideally positioned to supply the newer coal markets of South East Asia. Last year Indonesia's coal producers enjoyed export growth of approaching 30 Mt to 372 Mt (excluding lignite). This year, however, the vulnerability of some Indonesian producers to the Covid-related impacts on demand, particularly in India, has been evident.
