Australian coking coal exports in May dropped to a 15-month low, reflecting heavy reductions in demand in the world outside China. Indeed, the Australian prime hard coking coal spot price has eased by 17% since the start of the year to just over $109/t fob in the first week of July, according to IHS assessments. This contrasts with rising iron ore prices over the same period and highlights coking coal's greater exposure to markets outside China, such as Europe, India, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan as well as greater availability of global supply.
