Recently released trade data from the Panama Canal Authority give an overview of trade volumes through the waterway in the third year since the inauguration of the Neopanamax locks in June 2016.Total cargo volumes through the Panama Canal dropped by 2.7 Mt year-on-year to 256.4 Mt in FY2019 (October-September) as both dry bulk and container trade contracted. Indeed the only commodity to register robust annual growth was liquefied gas (LPG and LNG). However, thanks to an increase in the number of ballasting vessels using the Canal, the total number of transits increased slightly to 12,189.
