PRC Policymakers Vigilant Over Infla-tionary Risk

The latest economic performance indicators to emerge from China have triggered fresh debate on whether China's economy will run the risk of "overheating" this year. In February the Consumer Price Index rose 2.7% on an annual basis (see chart, right). Although the head of China's central bank publicly maintained that the rise in inflation was in line with expectations, commerce minister Chen Deming stated to the media that rising inflation was the chief economic policy concern this year.
