Strong rises in freight rates over the past month were initially led by the sub-Capesize sector before being accompanied more recently by a recovery in earnings for the larger vessel size range. From a low of $15,000/day in mid-February, average Handysize earnings are approaching $20,000/day. That represents the highest level since September 2008. Similarly, Supramax earnings of almost $30,000/day are at their highest for almost 18 months and compare with $21,000/day one month ago.
