Dry Bulk Demolition Surges

With over 3 months of 2011 remaining, total shipbreaking activity (actual scrapping, as distinct from ships sold for scrap) has already exceeded that seen in the whole of 2010. This has mainly reflected far greater demolition of bulker and combi tonnage, in response to very soft charter markets. This weakness of tonnage demand and vessel earnings has arisen from major disruptions to cargo supply from various key loading areas, plus fast-accelerating fleet additions, compared to those in 2010.
