US Grain Exports Jump

The much stronger US export performance through the 4q13 anticipated in September's MSR has started to materialise, as the first chart (right) demonstrates. Although the US government shutdown resulted in a temporary loss of weekly data collection from the US Department of Agriculture (three weeks of October have been averaged on the chart), this does show that at a combined 3.1 Mt in the final week of October, exports of corn, soyabeans and wheat were at their highest for three years. Furthermore, the volume increase has been steep, almost treble the 1.1 Mt exported in the week to 5 September.
