Steel Consumption Outlook Lowered

The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has released an updated Short Range Outlook (SRO) for world steel demand in which it has downgraded its forecast for global apparent steel use (ASU) in 2014 and 2015. World ASU is now expected to rise by 2.0% in both years to total 1,562 Mt of finished products in 2014 and 1594 Mt in 2015. This compares with forecast growth of 3.1% for 2014 and 3.3% for 2015 made in the previous SRO in April. The new projections also imply a sharp slowdown from last year's actual growth in world ASU of 3.8%. Worldsteel attribute the revisions to the weaker than expected performances by emerging and developing economies.
