Resurgent coal demand from India, alongside fresh coal-fired generating capacity additions in Pakistan, have formed a key part of coal import demand in the Pacific basin in recent months. In addition to overtaking Japan as the world's secondlargest steel producer, so spurring coking coal imports, a three-year low in utility stockpiles in India during the 4q17 (of five days nationally), as reported by the Central Electricity Authority, coincided with strong steam coal imports. At nine days' supply on 15 May, inventory levels were being termed "critical" at 25 of 114 power plants.
