One of the most eye-catching dry bulk trade growth developments of recent years has been China's import demand for bauxite and the redrawing of trade patterns, initially due to the Indonesian ban on unprocessed ore exports from January 2014 and then from increasing Capesize involvement in trades from Guinea during 2016 following investment by Chinese companies in local mining operations. The International Aluminium Institute (IAI) put last year's global aluminium production at 63.4 Mt, rising almost 6% on 2016, with China at the forefront of this expansion.
