I think London Underground has made a poor decision with the lack of seats in the Metropolitan Line's new 'S' stock: 306 seats replace 448 in a train of today's 'A' stock. LU has traded off the all day requirements of suburban traffic - the bulk of the usage on the line - for extra standing capacity on the high peak in Zones 1 and 2 (a small part of the overall traffic week). The original Public Private Partnership plan was to partly offset this with an increase in train frequency to provide more seat km, but the re-signalling required for this has been delayed, probably for six to eight years, with the collapse of the Metronet contract.
