White mats appeared recently in the four-foot beside the platform at East Kilbride station, writes reader Bryan Tennant. 'I jokingly said to someone that they were train "nappies".rnT was not far from the truth since 1 believe that they have been placed there to show up litter (usually not much) and effluent from the Class 156's toilets. They also show engineer boot marks...'.rnFirst ScotRail's John Yellowlees confirms that the track mats were installed by Network Rail as part of a four-week trial to manage diesel and effluent deposits on the track, in particular those locations served by Class 156 trains which do not have toilet retention tanks.rnThe purpose of the trial was to absorb unsightly diesel deposits and allow the complete removal of effluent deposits by applying granules to the affected area which solidify the effluent, and allow for this to be completely removed immediately without removing some of the surrounding ballast.
