Exciting times are in prospect on the East Coast main line. New Class 800 Inter-city Express trains have been ordered from Hitachi to replace the current Intercity 125s and 225s plying the route; these will start to arrive in August 2018. New signalling is in prospect, too: the European Rail Traffic Management System is due to start being rolled out between King's Cross and Doncaster in 2019/20. And the power supply is due to be beefed up with adoption of the autotransformer system.
